camino al mictlan

(on the way to the mictlan)

Camino al Mictlán is a series that delves into the intersection of memory, mythology, and the cyclical nature of life and death. Inspired by the Nahua concept of Mictlán—the underworld where souls journey through nine levels before reaching their final resting place—this body of work explores the liminal space between existence and transition.

Drawing from both personal experience and cultural heritage, I weave together elements of pre-Hispanic iconography, contemporary storytelling, and abstraction to evoke the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of identity. Layers of color and texture create a dreamlike atmosphere, blurring the boundaries between the material and the spiritual. The series serves as a meditation on mortality, transformation, and the unseen forces that connect us across generations.

By revisiting ancient narratives and reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens, Camino al Mictlán reflects on how history, myth, and memory shape our understanding of life’s impermanence.
